Sandbags 101: The Different Uses and Options

When it comes to sandbags, there are a few things you need to know to make the best purchase for your needs. This blog post will discuss the different types of sandbags and what to consider when picking the right one for your application.

What are sandbags?

Sandbags are made of woven polypropylene that is resistant to punctures and tears and can be used for various purposes such as construction, erosion control, and flood prevention. Sandbags are often filled with sand but can also be filled with dirt, gravel, or other filler material.

What are sandbags used for?

Flood Control

Sandbags are often used for flood control because they can absorb a large amount of water. In addition, sandbags can be stacked on top of each other to create a flood control structure, which helps prevent water from entering a home or building. Sandbags for flood protection are also quick and easy to deploy, making them ideal for emergency situations.

Erosion Control

Sandbags can be used for erosion control because they help stabilize the soil. Erosion can cause a lot of damage to property and can be dangerous. In addition, erosion can lead to the loss of valuable topsoil. By using sandbags to control erosion, you can help to protect your property and maintain the soil quality. In addition, sandbags can redirect water flow and prevent erosion.

Landscaping

Sandbags can be used for landscaping because they are able to add weight to a variety of objects. In addition, sandbags can help hold plants in place and prevent them from being blown away by the wind. Sandbags can also create a temporary border around a garden or plants. By using sandbags for landscaping, you can improve the appearance of your property and keep your plants safe from the elements.

What to consider when picking my sandbag?

Color

There are a few specifications when it comes to your sandbags that you may want to consider. First and foremost, the color. Sandbags come in many colors, i.e., gold, orange, white, black. With the quality being the same in all, the one note to take is when to choose a bright-colored bag. Bright colored sandbags, i.e. gold and orange, are great in construction applications or when you need you need to display caution.

Ties

It's also important to note if your sandbags come with built-in ties or not. Ties are attached to the top of the sandbag, so once filled, you are able to enclose the bag. If your sandbag does not come with built-in ties, you will need to purchase a separate closure. Galvanized wire ties are a great option. These pliable steel ties are a strong and durable closure option for sandbags without ties or as a reinforcement for sandbags that may be filled with heavier material than sand.

UV Protection

UV protection is another component to consider as you decide on your sandbags. Because sandbags are often used for construction projects and can be left outdoors for long periods, they will require IUV protection to ensure they can withhold the long hours in the sun. However, sandbags without UV protection can degrade and fade quickly. Choosing a sandbag with high UV protection can help them last longer outdoors and maintain their color.

Size

The size of the sandbag is also important. If the sandbag is too small, it can tear easily and lose its contents. If the sandbag is too big, it may be difficult to carry. Most sandbags are around 14 by 26 inches. Choosing the right size sandbag can also optimize your spend. If you're using a sandbag too large for your application then you could be overspending on your sandbag buys. On the other side of it, if you're using sandbags that are too small, they could be wearing too quickly causing you to buy more frequently.
